Looking for High-Quality Gabion Baskets? Find them here at EasyMerchant!
The best way to reimagine a garden, tackle erosion issues, or build a stunning retaining wall is by using the versatile solution that Gabions offer. With a reputation for durability and a flexible approach to landscape design, our Gabion Baskets at EasyMerchant are a staple in both domestic and commercial settings.
A Gabion Basket is a steel wire mesh cage, designed to be filled with stones or other durable materials. These baskets, when grouped together, can serve various purposes, from the aesthetic like garden decorations, raised beds, benches, and tables to the practical, such as erosion control and retaining walls. The small Gabion Baskets are not only affordable but also form an integral part of a range of landscaping designs across the UK.
Our Gabions are crafted from robust GALFAN-coated steel, an alloy of zinc and aluminium, offering superior corrosion protection. This feature enhances the Gabion Basket’s lifespan, enabling them to serve and enhance your space for anywhere between 50-100 years, depending on their specific application.
Each of our Gabion Baskets arrives as a flat pack kit for effortless storage, delivery, and installation. The kit includes six wire panels, twelve helicoil spiral wires, and additional structural support wires. A set of strong wire cutters can easily resize these, while pliers can join multiple baskets together with steel clips, thus making installation a breeze.
What can you fill these baskets with? Gabions can accommodate a variety of materials, ranging from decorative paddle stones and cobbles to gabion limestones. For a creative twist, try filling them with logs, painted rocks, or even plastic bottles. If you’re repurposing your Gabions as planters, they offer a sturdy frame for climbing plants to thrive, or for supporting tall, dried plants like bamboo or willow.
Our Gabions are known for their strength and resilience, as the GALFAN-coated steel wire construction only gets stronger over time. You can use Gabions for retaining walls, an application where they shine due to their porous nature that allows water to drain, avoiding damage to the structure. They seldom require concrete foundations, which sets them apart from most gravity retaining wall systems, and makes them an easy-to-install solution.
Our range of Gabions, from small, decorative baskets to larger Gabions for retaining walls, allows you to give your projects the flexibility they need at affordable costs. This perfect blend of practicality and aesthetics makes Gabions from EasyMerchant a desirable addition to your next project.
FAQ:
Q: What are Gabions?
A: Gabions are wire mesh cages made from GALFAN-coated steel, designed to be filled with stones or other hard materials for structural or decorative purposes.
Q: What are Gabion Baskets used for?
A: Gabions serve various purposes, from controlling erosion and creating retaining walls to landscaping enhancements like garden seating, tables, or decorations.
Q: How to fill Gabion Baskets?
A: Filling a gabion basket is a straightforward process, but doing it correctly ensures the longevity and effectiveness of the structure. Begin by preparing the site where the gabion will be placed. This involves levelling the ground and ensuring a firm foundation. Once the basket is assembled according to the manufacturer’s instructions, you’re ready to start filling.
Start by placing larger, more uniformly shaped stones at the corners and edges of the basket. These stones will be visible once the gabion is complete, so choose ones that are aesthetically pleasing. Fill the interior with stones, ensuring they are packed tightly. Using a mix of stone sizes can help achieve a tighter pack, which will add to the stability of the gabion. As you fill, periodically shake or tap the sides of the basket to help settle the stones and eliminate gaps. Once filled, secure the top of the basket as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
Regularly inspect the gabion basket, especially in the initial days after filling, to ensure that the stones are settling properly and there’s no bulging on the sides. Adjustments might be necessary as the stones settle. With proper filling and maintenance, your gabion basket will serve as a durable and attractive landscaping feature for years to come.
Q: How to install Gabion Baskets?
A: Each Gabion arrives as a flat pack kit, including all necessary components for installation. You will need to assemble the wire panels, using the helicoil wires and additional support wires provided.
Q: How to join Gabion Baskets together?
A: You can secure multiple Gabion Baskets together using steel clips or the helical wires. You can secure the steel clips with a pair of pliers.
Q: How to tie Gabion Baskets?
A: Although not standard for every basket, lacing wire can be used to join adjacent baskets as well as being used for extra support between panels either in the corners or from one side to another bracing, this helps prevent bulging when filling the gabion baskets with stone.
Q: How to stop Gabion Baskets from bulging?
A: Gabion baskets may bulge when they’re filled unevenly or overly full. To prevent this, ensure an even distribution of materials throughout the basket and don’t overfill it.
Q: What stone to use in Gabion Baskets?
A: The choice of stone fill greatly impacts the stability and appearance of the gabion wall. Angular stones are recommended for effective compaction and stability. Avoid rounded stones, which are more suitable for decorative purposes. Properly graded and well-arranged stone fill helps prevent voids and ensures a strong structure.Â
Q: What size stone for Gabion Baskets?
A: The size of the stone for Gabion Baskets typically depends on the mesh hole size. With a 75mm x 75mm mesh hole size, larger stones or cobbles are ideal.

Installation Guide
All parts included in the Flat pack Gabion Basket.
Gabion Baskets will arrive flat packed with the 6 wire mesh panels, 12 helical coils for joining the sides and 2 bracing bars that help prevent bulging when filling with stones.
Lay out the Gabion Basket Panels
The first step after unpacking all of the parts will be to lay out the panels , then screw the helical coils to the panels (as shown in the left hand image)
Fold into a Box
Secure sides with helical coils
Screw the coils into place down each corner leaving the lid in an open position. Helical coils may need to be cut using a hacksaw or wire snips, depending on the size of basket ordered.
Fill gabion Basket with Stones
Carefully fill the gabion basket with stones that are bigger than the holes in the wire mesh. The recommended size of rocks is between 100 – 200mm. Rocks with an angular shape work best as they can be easily interlocked. If only the front face of the basket is showing it may be more cost effective to carefully stack the front with aesthetically pleasing rocks while filling the back with rubble and bricks.
An optional, but recommended, step is to use bracing every third of the way up to help prevent bulging of the mesh faces while filling.
Close Gabion Basket Lid
Once you are satisfied with the position of the gabion stones and the basket has been filled, close the lid and fasten with the remaining helicoils. Gabion baskets can be secured next to each other using the helical coils or Gabion clips.
