What is an access section?

An access pipe is a short section of downpipe that’s designed to open up – in case you need to inspect, clean, or rod your downpipe stack.

In industrial or commercial settings, you may find that your building and/or health and safety regulations means you have to be able to access the downpipe on every floor level – so this makes the job quick and simple.

Fitting an access pipe

The push-fit nature of the access pipe makes it straightforward to fit one (or more) into your downpipe stack.

When you’ve decided where you need your access point, you should simply cut off your downpipe. Then, chamfer the cut edge to roughly 45-degrees. This cut end will then press into the access pipe – and there are internal shoulders that will make sure you don’t over-insert the downpipe.

When the pipe stops – back it off by a couple of millimetres to allow for expansions through the system – then you’re good to fit the next section of downpipe.

The internal seal with mean you create an instant watertight fit – with no need for sealant or fixings (like you would need with a cast iron system).

Should you find that the fit is a little too tight – you can use a silicone based lubricant to ease the connection. The sealant will dry leaving no residue – so you can be confident your watertight seal will remain.
