This manhole cover is able to withstand up to 3.5kn (tonnes) of loading weight. Ideally, lids of this weight range are most suited to pedestrian and landscape projects. It is designed as part of the underground drainage range, to fit onto a 320mm manhole base riser. Please note, as with all manhole covers, the measurement is of the clear opening, not of the actual lid and frame.

They are a superb product for replacing damaged or poor condition covers and also as an option for new installations. Whenever you’re replacing a lid though, you must ensure that the load rating is correct for its location or application. Fitting too low a load rating is dangerous and can lead to many health and safety breaches.

Unlike some cast iron or galvanised steel manhole covers, these manhole covers are made of super-strong and durable plastic material so they do not suffer from the problems traditional cast iron manufactured products do, for example, rusting around the frame. When this happens, they can become difficult to open as the edges no longer provide a clear opening and almost stick in place.

Another issue with traditional manufacture materials can be the risk of electrocution, especially as this can conduct electricity during stormy weathers.

The material used in the production of these covers is also recyclable and able to withstand a significant loading weight. We have two size options to choose from, dependent on the size of your inspection chamber:

• Option 01 available to fit a 320mm inspection chamber riser
• Option 02 available to fit a 470mm inspection chamber riser

This manhole cover is large and extremely durable. Given its manufacture from cutting edge materials and manufacturing processes, this enables these superb plastic lids to withstand almost every element it could possibly be exposed to, and provides a clear entry point for inspection by maintenance workers.

Why are manhole covers round?

The main reason manhole covers are traditionally round is because it prevents them from falling through the opening of the frame. A square cover can fall through the clear opening in the frame if positioned diagonally, which increases the risk of accident and damage, especially during installation or removal. A round manhole cover also provides the best resistance against the compression of the earth around it.

Whereas traditional materials (such as iron) resulted in a heavy product, manufacturing them in a durable plastic with a circular shape makes them easier to handle and more manoeuvrable.
