Black MDPE pipe (also known as black poly pipe or alkathene pipe) is made of MDPE – medium density polyethylene – a type of plastic that’s extremely tough – but not as brittle as some of the materials you’d expect to be used in the interior plumbing of a property.

Why?

Well, it’s all to do with the different stresses put on a pipe that’s designed to go underground. Black plastic MDPE pipe can withstand the stress of being under pressure – even when there are imperfections in the soil that surrounds it. Where normal pipes might fracture – MDPE has enough give to prevent leaks.
