What is blue cold water MDPE and what are some technical specs?

Blue water piping is used to bring a water supply from the mains to an individual property. The blue colour is used to identify it as potable (drinking water supply) – whereas black is used for non-potable – and similar yellow MDPE is used for gas.

MDPE pipe is stress evaluation to 12 BAR up to 10 and 63mm BAR for 90mm and 110mm – and suitable for temperatures of water up to 20 degrees C.

Why is MDPE used to create this type of pipe? Some MDPE properties explained

MDPE – otherwise known as Medium Density Polyethylene – is the perfect replacement for the copper that used to be used to bring water to a property. MDPE pipe is tough enough to withstand notches and uneven substrate – but flexible enough to create large diameter curves with virtually no effort.

MDPE is inert – which means it doesn’t react with chemicals it comes into contact with – nor does it provide a good environment for any microbial life – so you don’t have to worry about algae, fungi, or bacteria build up.

Blue MDPE is only to be used underground or where it’s shielded from light. There is no UV inhibitor in blue MDPE so it will fade quickly – even if stored in sunlight.
